Finally, the temperatures are dropping and we are inching closer than ever before to December. With that comes Yo La Tengo’s Hanukkah shows. I’ve been to a few shows in my day, but nothing tops these. It feels like an event. A true slice of heaven. The sounds of Georgia’s voice on Nowhere Near have firmly stained the walls of my brain. Guitar distortions rupturing my ears as they bounce around the stage. It all makes up the most magical night of my life. To see MJ Lenderman pass by me while waiting for the show to start was so fun. I was too overwhelmed to say anything, he had just dropped his Manning Fireworks album around that time and I was starstruck.
Little did I know that he was the musical opener for that night. He played Bark at the Moon, Wristwatch, all the classics from his then latest album. I was right there. Then later he came back to play Something There Is About You by Bob Dylan. That show was made for me. It was as if they knew I was coming and wanted to impress me. There were so many fun surprising moments in the show. They had Steve Shelley from Sonic Youth as a guest drummer!!
Here’s a clip I took from that night.
Anyway, my next show is gonna be Tame “I’m a father now so I guess my music stinks like last tuesdays chopped liver” Impala later this month. Will it be something to fawn over? I’m not sure, but this latest album Deadbeat does not bode well.
